Imagine if after three quarters of a football game the winner could be predicted 100 percent of the time. (Ad time in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl would be much cheaper, at least.) Golf, similar to bobsled in that it features an open field competing on the same course four times, is vastly different in terms of predictability. Over the past 10 years of golf majors, the eventual winner was in the lead 15 percent of the time after the first day. After days two and three, the percentage increased to 35 percent and 45 percent respectively. (Even when you account for the fact that there are a lot more competitors in a golf tournament than in a bobsled event, these numbers are still stark45 percent is a whole lot less than 100 percent.) Is it inherently bad to have a sport thats so predictable? It is at least in the case of bobsled, considering that it features four anonymous helmets poking out of identical sleds, with no particular strategy discernible to the naked eye. Given those parameters, youd think suspense would be the only reason to watch. Since theres absolutely no suspense to be had, youd be better off switching to Animal Planet whenever you see a bobsled charging across your television screen. Can this terrible sport be fixed? While the Olympics and the world championships feature four runs per team, all other competitions governed by the IBSF mandate only two runs. Bringing that format to the Olympics would increase variability and make the final result more dramatic. Considering that most bobsled competitions are already two runs, it wouldnt bastardize the sport to make this move. Of course, having fewer runs would decrease the chance that the best team wins. But that would at least inject a little bit of life into one of the dullest sports ever concocted by man.

Siendo, como es, un ser libre y cada individuo, diferente, persiste en intentar resolver las variaciones que él mismo provoca.
Dejando a un lado el que la misión del individuo y del conjunto sea acercar los extremos entre el mejor acomodado y el más mísero de los pobres, nuestro destino ha sido, es, y será, de forma irremediable, el de las diferencias; pues tan inevitable como que el hombre yerre, a menudo para mal de sus iguales, es que, desde el mismo punto de partida, exista quien se considere a gusto y conforme; quien prospere y crezca y quien, por ineptitud o despiste, acabe perdiendo todo.

Quizá no era tan mala idea, allá por los ochenta cuando cursaba la EGB, aquello de ponernos a los niños a leer, sin conocimiento ni vocación, las grandes novelas de la literatura española. Y digo que quizá no lo fuese porque, a pesar del enorme esfuerzo que suponía y de que apenas nos enterábamos ni de la mitad de lo que leíamos, al menos, en la mayoría de los casos, se quedaban en la memoria los trazos generales de las obras, la impresión primera que siempre queda de una lectura y la visión global de lo estudiado que, al abordarse en grupos de novelas, permitían unos años después recordar, por ejemplo, que Fortunata y Jacinta, La Regenta y Marianela, pertenecieron al mismo período narrativo.

El gusto por leer, sin embargo, era otra historia a la que sin duda no contribuían cuando nos obligaban a memorizar años de nacimiento y defunción, o cuando, por miedo al profesor, fingíamos reverencia hacia nombres que nada significaban para nosotros, o cuando mentíamos, directamente, al preguntarnos si habíamos leído el libro. Mentira en la que te podías estar jugando un suspenso, si el profesor te sacaba a preguntarte.

Es verdad que se adquiría culturilla, aunque fuese en los rasgos más superficiales, y también había a quien le encantaba la lectura, incluso de las obras más antiguas, pero en mi caso lo cierto era que para disfrutar de una novela o para saber valorarla me hacía falta una de estas dos cosas: que la historia me resultara interesante, o un poquito de madurez que me permitiera comprender la obra y empatizar con el autor. Claro está que con diez o doce años el segundo requisito no lo cumplía, y respecto al primero no lo llegué a encontrar en ninguno de los tantos libros venerados de nuestro patrimonio cultural. Así que podemos decir que no me enganché de ninguna forma al estudio de la literatura. Ni me interesaba, ni me gustaba, ni le encontraba aliciente alguno.

Luego llegó el instituto, que era más o menos lo mismo sólo que multiplicado. Nombres, fechas, títulos. Aprender de memoria los grandes logros de cada obra y, también, los pensamientos e intenciones que, según el autor o autores del libro de texto (y con los que a menudo discrepaba), tenía el escritor en el momento de crearla. Es decir, nada que me interesara. O al menos nada que me ayudara a acercarme a ellos, e hiciera que esos genios creadores, encumbrados al estado divino de inmortales de la literatura, bajaran al nivel terrenal para poder comprenderlos cara a cara, como personas que fueron, al igual que yo.

De algún modo, sin embargo, conseguí salir airosa de aquellos años de educación sin leer más que algunas páginas sueltas y algún que otro resumen ajeno, y casi ninguno de aquellos “tochos infumables” (así era como los llamaba) al completo. Tampoco había adquirido el hábito de leer (que no sé lo que es pero dicen que existe), ni -he de admitir- me preocupé por adquirirlo. Así fue transcurriendo el tiempo y así llenándose cada vez más mi ignorancia sobre el mundo literario, de modo que cuando fui libre de elegir, no quise leer.

Amigos, familiares, gente cercana, la gran mayoría leían a menudo. Casi todos obras de escritores contemporáneos. Bestsellers, Premios Planeta o literatos reconocidos. Daba igual. Ellos leían y yo no. Lo cual tampoco era tan grave (hay mucha gente que no lee), pero todos daban por sentado que a mí que me gusta escribir, me gustaría también leer y, por afición a las letras, sabría del tema más que ellos. Y yo, por vergüenza y miedo, fingía y ocultaba mi secreto.

Aquello duró muchos años. Tantos casi como los que tengo. Tampoco -lo sé- es algo de lo que uno tenga que avergonzarse, pero me afectaba un poquito. Me sentía en desventaja en las conversaciones. Inculta. Ignorante.

Lo más curioso, y por liar un poco más el tema, es que los libros me encantan. Adoro que me regalen libros. Disfruto paseando por las librerías. Ojear los tomos. Hojearlos. Leer algunas páginas. Imaginarme lo que guardan dentro. Pero cuando me siento con ellos de veras y nos hablamos de tú a tú, la gran mayoría me cansa enseguida.

Para colmo, lo único que he conseguido devorar con avidez son novelas románticas, de esas facilonas y predecibles. En fin, bochornoso. Pero aquí estoy, fuera de ningún escondite y asumiendo que me gusta mucho escribir, pero no leer. O por lo menos no aquello que me lleve demasiado tiempo. Me gustan las historias cortas. Disfruto a menudo con posts, poemas y relatos breves. Pero me cansa sobremanera una novela larga.

Estos últimos dos años, sin embargo, ha ocurrido algo significativo. Matriculada en Filología Hispánica (no es por castigarme, es que me encanta la Lengua) no me ha quedado más remedio que afrontar lo que he venido evitando tanto tiempo y ponerme a estudiar realmente literatura. Pero cuál ha sido mi sorpresa cuando, al encarar los libros de Textos Literarios, esperando encontrar la resabida lección de biografías y bibliografías, no se me ha pedido memorizar ningún autor, ni estudiar al dedillo fechas o publicaciones. El enfoque actual (o el orientado a los adultos, no lo sé), ha sido el de la comprensión de las épocas, modas y pensamientos. Y me he encontrado disfrutando (y sorprendiéndome por ello) al leer los textos y estudiar los temas. Evaluando con mi propio criterio, bajo las circunstancias de las diferentes corrientes y con los recursos lingüísticos aprendidos, cada novela y cada autor. Y me he encontrado con que, bajo mi perspectiva subjetiva, pero aplicando conocimientos objetivos, he encontrado en cada obra un punto de unión con sus personajes y su autor, de una forma íntima y personal. Y se ha producido el milagro: por fin le he encontrado el gusto al estudio de la literatura, ya sea porque tengo la madurez adecuada, porque el enfoque académico es el correcto o por la actitud con que lo he enfrentado. El hecho es que incluso me están entrando ganas de leerme todos los libros que llevo de retraso.

Tampoco voy a entusiasmarme demasiado (sé que nunca llegaré a ser una lectora adicta) pero me reconforta comprobar que entre los libros y yo comienza a gestarse, gracias al estudio, una bienvenida reconciliación.
